Where is the happy medium in work?

I have been pondering this question a lot lately. I’m at a crossroad.

I have lived through two totally different worlds the past 5 years. For one, I went back to school full-time & studied Child & Youth Care. I know what it’s like to work with no pay (during placement) or with minimum wage. Yet the reward from seeing children learn & grow is exponential – it cannot be monetized. On the other hand, I have also worked in the corporate world, where everyone is paid a decent living wage, and yet everyone is still stressed out, juggling a lot of responsibilities & living a very fast-paced lifestyle.

It’s as though I have lived in two total polar opposite fields. One that is intrinsically rewarding, yet not very high pay. Another where pay is very well, yet everyday feels like an emergency rush through life.

Does a middle ground exist? Is it possible to have a rewarding career and also decent pay? Am I being too idealistic?
